Tubulin beta chains are a family of proteins that, together with alpha tubulins, form the heterodimeric building blocks of microtubules. Microtubules are cylindrical polymers essential for cell shape, intracellular transport, chromosome segregation during mitosis and meiosis, and other cellular processes. Multiple genes encode different β-tubulin isoforms in humans, each with distinct tissue expression patterns and functional roles. Mutations or dysregulation in specific beta tubulins can cause disease. Many anti-cancer drugs target beta tubulins due to their role in mitosis.
Drugs bind to β-tubulin and interfere with microtubule dynamics, disrupting cell division and other microtubule-dependent processes.
