Overview

Tubulin gamma-2 chain (TUBG2) is a less common γ-tubulin isoform in vertebrates, part of the highly conserved tubulin family essential for initiating microtubule nucleation. γ-Tubulins, including TUBG2, assemble with specific gamma-tubulin complex proteins (GCPs) to form the γ-tubulin ring complex (γ-TuRC), which templates and organizes microtubule growth critical for mitosis, cell cycle progression, and spatial organization of the cytoskeleton[1][2][3]. While γ-tubulins are central structural proteins, they are not classical therapeutic targets (receptors/enzymes) and are not currently directly drugged in clinical practice. Their function is most notable in centrosomal and spindle pole body microtubule nucleation, and emerging research links γ-tubulin roles to cancer biology, genome stability, and possibly DNA repair[1].

Safety considerations

Disruption of γ-tubulin (and by extension, TUBG2) function may cause defects in cell division and genome stability, raising theoretical concern of cytotoxicity and possible tumorigenesis if broadly targeted
