Tubulin polymerization protein alpha chain (α-TUBULIN)

Target
α-TUBULIN
Molecular classification
Structural protein, Cytoskeletal protein
01

Overview

The tubulin polymerization protein alpha chain, commonly referred to as α-tubulin, is a highly conserved protein that plays a central role in the formation of microtubules—dynamic polymers essential for the cytoskeleton of eukaryotic cells. Together with β-tubulin, it forms heterodimers that are the building blocks of microtubules. Essential for polymerizing into dynamic microtubule structures that provide structural support, facilitate intracellular transport, and enable chromosome segregation during cell division. Mutations or altered expression levels in specific isoforms like TUBA1A can disrupt neuronal migration and axon pathfinding during brain development, leading to neurodevelopmental disorders. Additionally, tubulins are targets for several classes of antimitotic drugs used in cancer therapy.
