β-tubulin
Molecular classification

01

Overview

Tubulin subunit beta (β-tubulin) is a highly conserved protein that, together with alpha-tubulin (α-tubulin), forms heterodimers which are the fundamental building blocks of microtubules. Microtubules are dynamic cytoskeletal structures essential for maintaining cell shape, enabling intracellular transport, and facilitating cell division in all eukaryotic cells. β-Tubulin pairs with α-tubulin to form protofilaments that assemble into microtubules. Several drugs target specific sites on β-tubulin dimers to inhibit cell division. Altered expression or mutation of certain tubulin beta isoforms has been implicated in tumorigenesis, which has made tubulins key targets for chemotherapeutic drug development.
