Tubulointerstitial nephritis antigen like 1 (TINAGL1) is a secreted extracellular matrix glycoprotein with high sequence similarity to tubulointerstitial nephritis antigen (TINAG)[3]. It is localized to basement membranes, especially in renal tubules, where it plays a role in the development and differentiation of renal tubules during nephrogenesis[1][3]. TINAGL1 appears to regulate tubulogenesis, likely by modulating interactions with other matrix proteins such as type IV collagen, laminin, and integrin receptors. Its expression is developmentally regulated in the kidney, and its disruption selectively affects the formation and morphology of tubules, while sparing glomeruli[1]. TINAGL1 is also recognized by antibodies in certain immune-related tubulointerstitial nephritides and has been implicated in promoting bacterial colonization and gastritis in the gastric mucosa[5]. Mutations or altered expression of TINAGL1 have been associated with colorectal adenocarcinoma[3][5]. No approved drugs are currently noted to specifically target TINAGL1, and its value as a direct clinical biomarker or therapeutic target remains under investigation.
