Tumor Arterial Microvasculature

Molecular classification
Microvasculature, Arterioles, Tumor Vasculature
01

Overview

The tumor arterial microvasculature refers to the network of small arteries (arterioles) and their branches within tumors. Unlike normal tissue vasculature, which is highly organized, the microvasculature in tumors is profoundly abnormal in both structure and function. It exhibits disorganization, heterogeneity, immaturity, and hyperpermeability, leading to abnormal blood flow, impaired oxygen delivery, and increased interstitial pressure. These unique structural/functional abnormalities make tumor arterial microvasculature a key target for anti-cancer therapies.

02

Mechanism of action

Various, depending on the therapeutic agent. Anti-angiogenic agents inhibit new blood vessel formation or normalize existing tumor vasculature. Vascular disrupting agents selectively destroy tumor blood vessels.
