Tumor-associated antigen-presenting dendritic cells (DCs) are a specialized subset of immune cells found within the tumor microenvironment (TME). They are professional antigen-presenting cells, capable of uptaking, processing, and presenting tumor antigens to naïve T cells. This function is central to initiating and regulating anti-tumor immune responses. However, their phenotype and function can be profoundly influenced by the local TME, often leading to dysfunction or tolerogenic properties that impair anti-tumor immunity. Their dual potential—to either drive effective immune attack on tumors or promote tolerance depending on environmental cues—makes them both a biomarker for prognosis and an attractive target for next-generation immunotherapies.
