The tumor-associated antigen recognized by the BrE-3 monoclonal antibody is a specific epitope found on an epithelial glycoprotein mucin, commonly referred to as breast epithelial mucin. This antigen is highly expressed in certain cancer cells, particularly those of breast origin. Radiolabeled antibodies targeting this antigen are used in radioimmunotherapy to deliver cytotoxic radiation doses to tumor cells.
