Overview

Tumor-associated antigens (TAAs) are molecules, typically proteins or glycoproteins, that are present at elevated levels on the surface of tumor cells but can also be found at lower levels on some normal cells. They serve as targets for immune recognition and immunotherapeutic strategies. Because they are also present on healthy tissue, there is a risk of autoimmunity when targeting these molecules therapeutically. Common examples include HER2/neu, PSA, CEA, MAGE family, and AFP.
