Tumor-associated antigens in melanoma are molecules—often proteins or peptides—overexpressed or aberrantly expressed by melanoma cells, but not, or only at low levels, by normal tissues. These antigens can be intracellular or presented on the cell surface and are recognized by the immune system as abnormal, potentially triggering an immune response. Melanoma TAAs play a role in diagnosis, prognosis, and as targets for immunotherapy. Examples include MAGE-A, MART-1, gp100, and Tyrosinase.
