Tumor-associated antigens (TAAs) are molecules expressed at elevated levels on tumor cells compared to normal tissues. In the context of allogeneic NSCLC cells, these TAAs are shared across different individuals with NSCLC, making them attractive targets for immunotherapy and diagnostic approaches. TAAs can elicit immune responses, such as the production of autoantibodies and activation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), which can target and kill tumor cells. Allogeneic NSCLC cell lines expressing shared TAAs are being explored as a source of antigens for cancer vaccines to stimulate a broad anti-tumor immune response. However, because TAAs are not strictly tumor-specific, therapies targeting them must balance efficacy with the risk of off-target effects on healthy tissues.
TAAs serve as targets for immunotherapy. Immunotherapies such as vaccines and checkpoint inhibitors enhance the immune system's ability to recognize and destroy cancer cells expressing TAAs. Allogeneic cell vaccines present a diverse array of TAAs to the patient's immune system, stimulating T cell responses against shared tumor antigens.
