Tumor bed tissue refers not to a specific molecule or receptor, but rather to the anatomical region where a malignant tumor was previously located before being removed by surgery or treated with chemotherapy/radiation/hormone therapy. After resection or ablation of the primary malignancy, this zone is examined pathologically for evidence of residual cancer cells and other features such as fibrosis, necrosis, inflammation, and calcification. The assessment of this region is critical in oncology because it helps determine how much viable cancer remains after therapy—a key factor in prognosis and further management decisions. Pathologists use standardized scoring systems such as the residual cancer burden (RCB) system and various regression scores, which quantify remaining disease within the tumor bed. These scores inform clinicians about treatment efficacy and guide subsequent therapeutic choices. In breast cancer management especially, radiotherapists may deliver an additional dose ("boost") specifically targeted at this anatomical site post-surgery. Importantly—and critically for structured data purposes—"tumor bed tissue" is not considered a therapeutic target like receptors or enzymes, but rather an anatomical/pathological concept essential for staging and monitoring response.
