The process by which autologous cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) infiltrating a tumor (tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, or TILs) recognize and bind to antigens presented on the surface of tumor cells via their T cell receptors (TCRs). This recognition event triggers CTL activation and targeted killing of tumor cells. This process can be therapeutically harnessed using adoptive cell therapy and other immunotherapeutic strategies.
