Overview

Tumor cell lysis refers to the process by which tumor (cancer) cells are destroyed, leading to the release of their intracellular contents into the surrounding environment. This phenomenon is most clinically recognized in the context of *tumor lysis syndrome* (TLS), a potentially life-threatening condition that arises when a large number of tumor cells die rapidly, either spontaneously or as a result of cancer therapy. When tumor cells lyse, they release potassium, phosphate, nucleic acids (which are metabolized into uric acid), and other cellular components into the bloodstream. While "tumor cell lysis" itself is not a molecular target but rather a biological outcome/process, many anticancer strategies aim specifically at inducing efficient tumor cell lysis through various mechanisms.
