Overview

The tumor cell membrane is the outer boundary of cancer cells, composed primarily of a lipid bilayer interspersed with proteins, glycoproteins, and other molecules. It plays a critical role in cellular communication, adhesion, signaling, and the regulation of substance transport into and out of the cell. Targeting the tumor cell membrane, particularly via accumulation strategies, aims to exploit unique features of the membrane to achieve selective accumulation or retention of therapeutic agents within tumors. This includes utilizing the EPR effect, active targeting with ligands binding to overexpressed receptors, and homotypic targeting with cell-membrane-coated nanoparticles.
