Overview

The tumor cell membrane, when targeted by hyperthermia-induced cytotoxicity, refers to the plasma membrane of cancer cells as the site where heat-based therapies exert their effects. Hyperthermia involves raising tissue temperatures (typically 39–45 °C) to induce cell death through apoptosis or necrosis, exploiting the increased sensitivity of tumor cells to elevated temperatures. The mechanism of action involves membrane disruption, oxidative stress, apoptosis induction and enhanced drug delivery. Selectivity for tumor cells over normal cells occurs due to poorer blood flow and more acidic/hypoxic microenvironments.
