The mitochondrial membrane in tumor cells, comprised of the outer and inner mitochondrial membranes (OMM and IMM), plays a critical role in cellular metabolism, apoptosis regulation, and drug resistance. The IMM is highly impermeable and houses the electron transport chain and ATP synthase, essential for energy production. The OMM regulates apoptosis via the release of pro-apoptotic factors. Alterations in membrane structure, protein composition, and dynamics, especially concerning fission and fusion, are common in cancer cells and offer therapeutic targets. Targeting these membranes can selectively induce apoptosis or metabolic collapse within cancer cells but requires careful consideration of potential toxicities and delivery challenges.
