Overview

The term Tumor cells and immune cells refers to the heterogeneous collection of malignant cells and various immune cell types, such as T cells, B cells, macrophages, and natural killer cells, that interact within the tumor microenvironment (National Cancer Institute, 2023). This interaction is a focal point of modern oncology, as cancer cells often develop mechanisms to suppress immune cell activity and evade detection (Nature Reviews Cancer, 2021). While this cellular interplay is the basis for immunotherapies, the term itself does not describe a single molecular target like a specific receptor, enzyme, or ion channel. Instead, it represents a broad biological context containing numerous distinct therapeutic targets such as PD-1, CTLA-4, and various tumor-associated antigens. Because it encompasses an entire ecosystem of different cell types and signaling pathways, it is considered an incorrect or overly broad designation for a specific therapeutic target in drug discovery.
