Overview

Tumor cells and tumor tissue represent the pathological manifestation of uncontrolled cellular growth and survival within a host. This entity is characterized by the "hallmarks of cancer," which include sustaining proliferative signaling, evading growth suppressors, resisting cell death, and inducing angiogenesis (Hanahan & Weinberg, 2011, Cell). The tumor microenvironment (TME) further complicates this target, as it includes a complex interplay between malignant cells, stromal fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and infiltrating immune cells (National Cancer Institute, 2023). While traditional therapies like chemotherapy and radiation target the rapid division of these cells, modern precision medicine focuses on specific molecular aberrations within the tissue. However, the inherent genetic instability and heterogeneity of tumor tissue often lead to the development of drug resistance and treatment failure (NIH, 2022). Understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of tumor tissue is critical for the development of effective therapeutic strategies (Nature Reviews Cancer, 2020).
