Target intelligence / Profile preview
The tumor-feeding arterial lumen refers to the internal space of the arteries that specifically provide the blood supply, oxygen, and nutrients required for the growth and survival of a solid tumor (StatPearls, 2023). In interventional oncology, this anatomical structure is the primary route for regional therapies such as transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) (National Cancer Institute). By targeting these specific vessels, clinicians can deliver high concentrations of chemotherapeutic agents or radioactive microspheres directly to the tumor while simultaneously obstructing blood flow to induce ischemia (Journal of Hepatology, 2016). While not a molecular target in the traditional sense, the identification and catheterization of the tumor-feeding arterial lumen are critical for the effective treatment of hypervascular malignancies, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma and certain metastatic liver cancers (PubMed, PMID: 27013391). The procedure relies on the differential blood supply of tumors compared to normal organ parenchyma, allowing for selective destruction of malignant tissue (RadiologyInfo.org).
The lumen serves as a conduit for the delivery of embolic agents to induce ischemia and chemotherapeutic agents to provide localized cytotoxicity (StatPearls, 2023).
