Tumor neoantigen-expressing cells are cancer cells that present neoantigens—novel, tumor-specific antigens generated by somatic mutations or other tumor-specific alterations. Because they are absent from healthy cells and not subject to central immune tolerance mechanisms, neoantigens represent highly specific targets for immune recognition and attack. These cells are prime candidates for personalized cancer vaccines, adoptive cell therapies, and biomarkers for predicting response to checkpoint blockade therapies.
Neoantigens are presented by MHC molecules on tumor cell surfaces, activating T cells and leading to tumor cell killing.
