Tumor neoantigen peptides are mutated self-peptides uniquely expressed by cancerous tissue due to somatic genetic alterations. Their absence in normal tissue makes them ideal targets for highly specific immunotherapies—including personalized vaccines—that harness the body’s own adaptive immunity for precise anti-cancer effects without harming healthy tissues. They arise from tumor-specific mutations, processed and presented on the surface of tumor cells by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules, can be recognized as "non-self" by the immune system, triggering an anti-tumor immune response.
