A tumor-specific mutant peptide–MHC complex, or neoantigen, is a molecular structure formed when peptides derived from tumor-specific mutations are presented on the surface of cancer cells by MHC molecules. These neoantigens are not present in normal tissues and arise due to somatic mutations unique to the tumor, making them highly specific targets for immune recognition and cancer immunotherapy.
Neoantigen-based therapies prime or redirect T cells to specifically target and kill tumor cells expressing the unique neoantigen.
