Tumor Suppressor p53 Protein (p53)

Target
p53
Molecular classification
Transcription factor
01

Overview

The tumor suppressor p53 protein, encoded by the TP53 gene, is a critical transcription factor that maintains genomic stability and prevents cancer formation. It acts as a sequence-specific transcription factor, inducing growth arrest, apoptosis, or senescence depending on cellular stress. p53 is a modular protein with structured domains (DNA-binding, oligomerization) and unstructured regions at N-/C-terminals. Loss or mutation of functional p53 leads to unchecked cell division, a hallmark event in cancer development.
