Overview

Tumor tissue, primarily in the liver, that is selectively irradiated using localized beta-radiation from yttrium-90 (Y-90)-labeled microspheres. This approach, known as radioembolization or selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT), delivers high doses of radiation directly to tumors via preferential lodging of the microspheres in the hypervascularized tumor capillaries, while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. This is achieved through arterial injection of Y-90 microspheres rather than molecular targeting.
