Target intelligence / Profile preview
Tumor tissue thermal properties refer to the intrinsic physical characteristics—including thermal conductivity, specific heat, and thermal diffusivity—that determine how heat is absorbed and distributed within a cancerous mass (Priyadarshini et al., 2020; Journal of Thermal Biology). These properties are significantly influenced by the tumor's microenvironment, characterized by high water content, dense cellular packing, and chaotic, non-linear blood perfusion (Deng & Liu, 2004; International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer). While not a molecular or therapeutic target in the traditional pharmacological sense, these properties are critical parameters in the field of thermal oncology. They dictate the success of treatments like radiofrequency ablation (RFA), microwave ablation (MWA), and hyperthermia by defining the volume of tissue destroyed by heat (Habash et al., 2006; Critical Reviews in Biomedical Engineering). Understanding the variance in thermal properties between malignant and healthy tissues is essential for precise treatment planning and for minimizing collateral damage to surrounding vital structures (Gautherie, 1980; Biomedical Thermology).
Not applicable as this is a set of physical properties; however, these properties govern the efficacy of physical thermal modalities such as radiofrequency ablation and hyperthermia.
