Overview

Localized beta particle emission targets tumor tissue by delivering radioisotopes directly into or near malignant lesions. The emitted high-energy electrons cause lethal DNA damage both within targeted cancerous cells and nearby non-targeted ones through cross-fire effects. While this enhances efficacy even with heterogeneous marker expression among cancerous tissues, it also poses risks of collateral injury—especially myelotoxicity—necessitating careful selection of isotopes and delivery methods tailored both for safety and maximum therapeutic benefit.
