Turbidity is a physical property characterizing the cloudiness or haziness of a fluid caused by the presence of individual particles that scatter light, such as suspended solids or organic matter. It is not a molecular target, receptor, or enzyme, but rather a macroscopic indicator of the physical state of a solution or biological sample. In clinical settings, the turbidity of fluids like urine or cerebrospinal fluid is used as a diagnostic biomarker to identify the presence of bacteria, white blood cells, or crystals, which may signify infection or inflammation (MedlinePlus, 2023). In the biotechnology industry, turbidity is an essential metric for monitoring the stability and aggregation of monoclonal antibodies and other biologics during manufacturing and storage, as increased turbidity often correlates with protein denaturation (PubMed, 2021). Because it represents the collective optical effect of particles rather than a specific molecular entity, it lacks a defined sequence, structure, or ligand-binding site for drug interaction. Consequently, pharmaceutical interventions are directed at the underlying biological causes of the particles, such as antibiotics for bacterial infections, rather than the property itself. As such, turbidity is classified as a physical measurement rather than a therapeutic target for drug discovery.
