TWIK-related potassium channel 1 (TREK-1)

Target
TREK-1
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Potassium channel, Two-pore-domain potassium channel (K2P)

Overview

TWIK-related potassium channel 1 (TREK-1) is a member of the two-pore-domain potassium (K2P) channel family. It is a potassium leak channel that produces instantaneous and non-inactivating K+ currents. TREK-1 is mechanosensitive and responds to temperature changes, pH shifts, fatty acids, and certain anesthetics. It plays a role in regulating neuronal excitability, pain perception, mood regulation, and cardiovascular function. Inhibition of TREK-1 has been linked to antidepressant-like effects. Dysregulation may contribute to arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation.
