TWIK-related spinal cord potassium channel (TRESK)

Target
TRESK
Molecular classification
Potassium channel, Two-pore domain potassium channel, Ion channel

Overview

TRESK (TWIK-related spinal cord potassium channel), also known as KCNK18 or K2P18.1, is a member of the two-pore domain potassium (K2P) channel family. These "leak" potassium channels maintain the resting membrane potential. TRESK is highly expressed in sensory neurons and immune cells, regulating neuronal excitability and pain perception. Its activity is regulated by intracellular calcium and calcineurin. Mutations in KCNK18 are linked to migraine with aura. Pharmacological modulation is a therapeutic strategy for migraine, neuropathic pain and potentially immune disorders.
