The two-pore calcium channel 3 pseudogene (ENSG00000184115) is the human remnant of an ancestral gene encoding a two-pore channel (TPC3), which is part of a family of intracellular ion channels responsible for calcium release from acidic organelles in many deuterostomes. In humans and other primates, however, this gene contains inactivating mutations such as frameshifts and premature stop codons, rendering it a pseudogene with no protein product or known biological function. Functional TPCs such as TPC1 and TPC2 remain in humans, where they regulate endolysosomal calcium signaling, but TPC3's function is lost in primates.
