Type 1 Invariant Natural Killer T Cell (iNKT Cell)

Target
iNKT Cell
Molecular classification
Lymphocyte, T cell subset

Overview

Type 1 invariant natural killer T cells (iNKT cells) are a unique subset of lymphocytes that bridge innate and adaptive immunity. They are defined by their expression of an invariant T cell receptor (TCR) α-chain (Vα14-Jα18 in mice and Vα24-Jα18 in humans) paired with a limited set of β-chains. These cells recognize lipid antigens presented by the non-polymorphic MHC class I-like molecule CD1d. Upon activation, iNKT cells rapidly secrete large amounts of cytokines, playing diverse roles in immune regulation, anti-tumor immunity, and inflammatory diseases.
