Type 1 iodothyronine deiodinase (DIO1)

Target
DIO1
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Selenoenzyme
01

Overview

Type 1 iodothyronine deiodinase (D1) is a selenoenzyme that plays a crucial role in thyroid hormone metabolism. It catalyzes the conversion of thyroxine (T4) to the active hormone triiodothyronine (T3), as well as the inactivation of T4 to reverse T3 (rT3). D1 is primarily expressed in the liver, kidney, thyroid gland, and pituitary gland, and its activity is regulated by thyroid hormones, cytokines, and certain drugs. It is an important therapeutic target for managing thyroid disorders.
