Overview

Fimbriae types 2 and 3 (FIM2 and FIM3) are hair-like protein structures found on the surface of certain bacteria, including Bordetella pertussis and Klebsiella pneumoniae. They function as adhesins, mediating bacterial attachment to host tissues or abiotic surfaces, playing a significant role in colonization, biofilm formation, and pathogenesis. In B. pertussis, they are vaccine antigens. In K. pneumoniae, type 3 fimbriae are encoded by the mrkABCDF gene cluster and are crucial for biofilm development.
