Overview

Type I bovine collagen is a primary structural protein derived from cattle, predominantly found in skin, tendon, and bone (UniProt: P02453). It consists of a triple helix structure typically composed of two alpha-1 chains and one alpha-2 chain, providing essential tensile strength and structural integrity to the extracellular matrix (PubMed: 28258303). In therapeutic contexts, it is widely utilized as a biomaterial for wound dressings, surgical hemostats, and tissue engineering scaffolds due to its biocompatibility and ability to promote cellular attachment and migration (PubMed: 31108064). It also serves as a pharmacological target for collagenase enzymes, which are used to debride chronic wounds or treat fibroproliferative conditions like Dupuytren's contracture by enzymatically breaking down the collagen fibrils (FDA: Santyl). While highly effective as a regenerative agent, its bovine origin requires rigorous purification and screening to mitigate risks of immunogenicity and zoonotic disease transmission, such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (PubMed: 11702613).

Mechanism of action
