Type II NADH-quinone oxidoreductase (NDH-2) is a membrane-bound enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of electrons from NADH to quinones in the respiratory chain. Unlike complex I, NDH-2 does not translocate protons across the membrane. It is found in bacteria, archaea, fungi, plants, and some protozoa but is absent from mammalian mitochondria, making it an attractive target for antimicrobial drug development. NDH-2 oxidizes NAD(P)H to regenerate NAD(P)+ and reduces quinones, which then participate further down the electron transport chain.
