Type V collagen is a fibrillar collagen and a minor component of connective tissues, widely distributed throughout the body. It plays a crucial regulatory role in the formation and organization of collagen fibrils, particularly by co-assembling with type I collagen to form heterotypic fibers. Mutations or deficiencies in genes encoding Type V Collagen can cause classical Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
