Tyrosinase is a copper-containing oxidase enzyme that plays a central role in the biosynthesis of melanin and other pigments from tyrosine. It catalyzes the hydroxylation of monophenols and the oxidation of o-diphenols to o-quinones, which spontaneously polymerize to form melanins. In humans, tyrosinase is essential for melanin production in melanocytes, contributing to pigmentation of skin, hair, and eyes. Mutations in the TYR gene can cause oculocutaneous albinism. Tyrosinase also has biotechnological applications in bioremediation, dye production, and food processing.
