Overview

Tyrosinase-related protein 1 (TYRP1) is an enzyme located in melanocytes, playing a role in melanin production. While its exact enzymatic function is less clear than tyrosinase, it stabilizes tyrosinase, modulates its activity, maintains melanosome structure, and affects melanocyte proliferation and cell death. Mutations in TYRP1 cause oculocutaneous albinism type 3. High expression or altered function may contribute to melanoma cell proliferation.
