Overview

Tyrosine-protein kinase ABL1, commonly referred to as c-Abl, is a non-receptor tyrosine kinase encoded by the ABL1 gene. It plays a central role in regulating various cellular processes including cell differentiation, division, adhesion, cytoskeleton remodeling, DNA repair, and stress response. A hallmark pathological event involving ABL1 is the t(9;22) chromosomal translocation that fuses BCR with ABL1 to create the BCR–ABL fusion gene, a key driver in chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and some cases of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Abl has been a major target for selective small-molecule inhibitors such as imatinib for CML therapy.
