Overview

U3 small nucleolar RNA-associated protein 18 homolog (UTP18) is a core component of the small subunit (SSU) processome, a nucleolar ribonucleoprotein complex required for the assembly and processing of the precursor to the small (18S) ribosomal RNA subunit in eukaryotes. It contains the WD40 repeat domain, which acts as a scaffold for multiprotein complex assembly but lacks catalytic activity. UTP18 enables RNA binding and contributes to the coordinated folding, modification, cleavage, and degradation of pre-rRNA during the maturation of ribosomal subunits. The gene is implicated in ribosomal biogenesis and nucleolar structure, with genetic variations associated with diseases such as Spinocerebellar Ataxia 13. There is no evidence for therapeutic targeting, drug interactions, or established biomarker/safety information in the current literature.
