Overview

U6 small nuclear RNA 2 (RNU6-2) is one of several highly-conserved snRNAs housed within small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) that together form the major (U2-dependent) spliceosome. The U6 snRNA acts at the center of the spliceosome, orchestrating both the structural rearrangements needed for activation and the catalytic chemistry of splicing. It is essential for the excision of introns from pre-mRNA through a two-step transesterification reaction. U6 snRNA is notable for its evolutionary conservation and is present in multiple genomic copies; RNU6-2 is one annotated variant. In molecular biology research, RNU6-2 is commonly used as an internal control for normalization in quantitative PCR, particularly for microRNA expression studies. It does not function as a receptor, enzyme, or recognized drug target, and has not been directly linked to disease pathogenesis or therapeutic action.
