Overview

RNU6-679P (RNA, U6 small nuclear 679, pseudogene) is a processed pseudogene related to U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) in the human genome. Canonical U6 snRNA is an essential non-coding RNA component of the spliceosome: it is required for the removal of introns from pre-mRNA during splicing and is highly conserved and structurally complex[1][3]. However, as a pseudogene, RNU6-679P is a non-functional copy and generally does not encode an active RNA species or protein. Pseudogenes can sometimes be transcribed and serve as regulatory RNAs, influencing cellular gene expression by sponging microRNAs, generating siRNAs, or modulating RNA-binding protein availability[2]. There are no reports of RNU6-679P acting as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or direct therapeutic target, and it is not associated with drug interactions or used as a biomarker in current clinical practice. Like other pseudogenes, its primary significance is genomic, and any functional role would be mediated through RNA-based regulatory networks if such transcription occurs.
