Overview

U6 small nuclear RNA 85, pseudogene (RNU6-85P), is a genomic sequence in humans derived from the U6 small nuclear RNA gene but has lost its original snRNA function due to mutations and is classified as a noncoding RNA pseudogene. The canonical U6 snRNA is a key component of the spliceosome, the complex that catalyzes removal of introns from pre-mRNA during splicing, and is highly conserved across species, reflecting its essential role in gene expression. Numerous U6 snRNA pseudogenes, including RNU6-85P, are present throughout the human genome, and their proliferation is linked to retrotransposition events, particularly those mediated by LINE-1 elements. These pseudogenes serve as markers of retrotransposition activity but are not transcribed into functional snRNA, nor do they encode proteins. There is no evidence that RNU6-85P is functionally active, pathogenic, or relevant as a therapeutic target.
