U6 snRNA-associated Sm-like protein LSm5 is a component of the LSM protein family involved in pre-mRNA splicing and mRNA degradation. It is a member of the highly conserved Sm-like (LSm) proteins, which assemble into heptameric complexes essential for RNA processing tasks, notably forming part of the U4/U6-U5 tri-snRNP complex that is required for spliceosome assembly. LSm5 binds specifically to the 3’-terminal U-tract of U6 snRNA and is important in both splicing and mRNA turnover. LSm5 is encoded by the LSM5 gene in humans and is highly conserved across species. Sm-like/LSm proteins are not typical drug targets (e.g., receptors, enzymes, or channels), but play fundamental roles in gene expression at the RNA-processing level. There are currently no directly interacting therapeutic drugs or established molecular biomarkers tied to LSM5. No major therapeutic safety concerns or mechanisms of drug action have been described for LSM5. LSM5 is functionally characterized as an RNA-binding protein, essential for the assembly and function of the spliceosome.
