Overview

U7 snRNA-associated Sm-like protein LSM10 (LSM10) is a specialized Sm-like protein that is uniquely incorporated into the U7 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) complex responsible for the 3′-end processing of replication-dependent histone pre-mRNAs[1][2][3]. Unlike canonical spliceosomal snRNPs, U7 snRNP contains LSM10 and LSM11, which together replace the typical SmD1 and SmD2 proteins of the Sm core ring. The presence of LSM10 is dictated by the unique Sm-binding site of U7 snRNA, and its assembly into the U7 snRNP is essential for proper localization (Cajal bodies, histone locus bodies) and function in histone mRNA processing, thereby regulating cell cycle progression[1][2][3][4]. Knockdown or mutation of LSM10 disrupts histone mRNA maturation and cell cycle control[1][4].

Mechanism of action

Not applicable (no drug mechanism reported; LSM10 itself enables binding of U7 snRNA and participates in the formation and function of U7 snRNP)

03

Biological functions

Histone pre-mRNA 3′-end processingPositive regulation of G1/S transition of mitotic cell cycleStructural assembly of U7 snRNP complexSubnuclear localization to Cajal bodies and histone locus bodies
04

Disease associations

Other (no direct disease association described; aberrant histone mRNA processing has indirect implications for cell cycle regulation, which can influence cancer biology but LSM10 itself is not established as a clinical disease target)
