Overview

Ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase hinge protein like (UQCRHL) is a gene closely related to the true ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase hinge protein (UQCRH), and encodes a protein with high sequence similarity to UQCRH. UQCRHL is sometimes categorized as a pseudogene because it appears to be derived from UQCRH, but it retains an open reading frame and may encode a protein of similar size and function as UQCRH. It has been postulated to act as a component of the mitochondrial cytochrome b-c1 complex (complex III of the respiratory chain), possibly involved in assembling or mediating electron transfer between cytochromes. There is no clear evidence that UQCRHL is a functional, essential, or druggable therapeutic target in humans, and the primary literature and gene databases do not indicate a well-established or unique physiological or pathological function for this gene. Its main paralog, UQCRH, is well-established as a complex III subunit integral to mitochondrial function, but UQCRHL is mainly referenced as a possible pseudogene with potential residual function[3][4][2]. - UQCRHL should not be considered a canonical therapeutic target due to its uncertain protein-coding status, lack of demonstrated essential function in human physiology, and insufficient data supporting druggability or association with human diseases beyond rare genomic deletion events[3][4].
