Ubiquitin–Proteasome System (UPS)

Target
UPS
Molecular classification
Enzyme complex
01

Overview

The ubiquitin–proteasome system (UPS) is the principal pathway for regulated protein degradation in eukaryotic cells. It is essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis by selectively degrading misfolded, damaged, or regulatory proteins and thus controls numerous cellular processes including cell cycle progression, signal transduction, and stress responses. The UPS involves ubiquitin tagging of target proteins by E1, E2, and E3 enzymes, followed by recognition and degradation by the 26S proteasome.

02

Mechanism of action

Inhibition of proteasome activity, leading to accumulation of polyubiquitinated proteins and cell death, particularly in cancer cells.
