Overview

Ubiquitin-associated protein 2 (UBAP2) is a multi-domain protein containing a classic UBA (ubiquitin-associated) domain, frequently functioning in the ubiquitination pathway and participating in the degradation of cellular proteins. It also contains RNA-binding domains and is implicated in diverse cellular functions including protein synthesis, stress granule formation, and bone cell differentiation[1][4]. UBAP2 forms complexes with proteins such as Annexin A2, promoting their degradation via ubiquitination, which can inhibit cancer progression (notably hepatocellular carcinoma) and regulate signaling pathways related to cell growth and differentiation[2][3][5]. Recent findings implicate UBAP2 in bone homeostasis: its depletion leads to impaired osteoblast differentiation and enhanced osteoclast differentiation, contributing to the pathogenesis of osteoporosis[3]. UBAP2 is detectable in human plasma and changes in its levels may correlate with disease states such as osteoporosis and cancer[3]. No approved drugs currently target UBAP2 directly, but its roles in disease and protein regulation make it a candidate for future therapeutic strategies.
