Overview

UBE2MP1 is a transcribed pseudogene derived from the ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2 M (UBE2M) gene. Unlike its parental gene, UBE2MP1 does not encode a protein; instead, its RNA transcript acts as a long non-coding RNA with functional effects in tumorigenesis. In hepatocellular carcinoma, high expression of UBE2MP1 is associated with poor clinical outcomes. Functionally, UBE2MP1 acts as a molecular sponge for the tumor-suppressor microRNA miR-145-5p, thereby influencing the miR-145-5p/RGS3 regulatory axis to promote cell proliferation, block cell cycle progression, and suppress apoptosis. While its mechanistic role is established in cancer biology, UBE2MP1 is not currently a classic therapeutic target, but its modulation represents a potential novel strategy for cancer prevention or treatment. UBE2MP1 should not be confused with the parental UBE2M gene, which is a bona fide member of the ubiquitin-conjugating E2 enzyme family[1][4].
